Her main research areas of interest include intellectual property, competition policy, market regulation and consumer policy, digital innovation, data strategy and economic analysis of law.
After completing an LLM (focus on Intellectual property) at the London School of Economics and a PhD in competition law advanced by the University of Perugia together with Luiss University and Bocconi University, she succeeded a Tenured Professorship in 2008.
She is Full Professor of Economics Law, Scientific Coordinator of a PhD Doctoral Course, admitted to the “Innovative and interdisciplinary” qualification, in “Persona e benessere fra diritto, etica e psicologia” and Director of ICPC – Innovation, Regulation and Competition Policy Centre at the European University of Rome. She is currently serving as Unity Coordinator of a PRIN – Scientific Project of National Relevance, on E-Agorà: online contract platforms and as Senior Legal Advisor to the Italian Minister and Department of Technological Innovation and Digital Transition. Professor Falce is Member of the Appeals Committee of the European Patent Office, Administrative Council, Member of the Jury Board of the Italian Institute for Advertising Self-Regulation (IAP) and Non-Governmental Advisor of the ICN-International Competition Network.
She was awarded with the Jean Monnet (ad personam) Chair in EU Innovation Policy (2018-2021), she served as Scientific Coordinator of the Project on FinTech, co-funded by EACEA and the Bank of Italy (2019-2021) and as Scientific Coordinator of the Project on Digital Markets and Competition Law co-funded by the European Commission-DG Competition (2019-2021). She is past Member of the Italian Board of Appeal against Italian Patent and Trademark Office Decision (art. 135 Italian Code for Industrial Property) and past Effective Member of the Italian Banking Ombusman (ABF).
From 2011 she is Director of the Research Centre on Information, Innovation and Copyright Law (CREDA), resulting from the Partnership between the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and the Università Europea di Roma. She is Member of the Executive Board of ASCOLA-Academic Society for Competition Law and Funding Member of the Italian Academy of the Internet Code. In 2017 she has been appointed as Independent Advisor within the Italian Big data Market Study (IC) jointly conducted by the Italian Competition Authority together with the Communication and the Privacy Authorities. Member of the Ministry of Economic Developments working Group for the implementation of the Trademark and European patent with Unitary effect packages, she has been consulted by the Ministry of Justice in relation to the most relevant issues relating the implementation in Italy of the Trade secret Directive.
Nicola Faraone is Post-Doc Researcher/Research Fellow of the Research Centre “ICPC-Innovation, Regulation and Competition Policy Centre” of the European University of Rome.
His main research areas of interest include competition law, intellectual property, EU State aid law, and economic analysis of law as they apply to digital, media, data, and platforms technology.
He completed his Ph.D. in Economics, Law, and Institutions at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” (2017), with a thesis focusing on EU State aid law and, particularly, on the principle of burden-sharing in the context of state/public support to banks in distress. He obtained an LLM in Competition, Innovation, and Trade Law from London School of Economics and Political Science (2017), a PostGraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Competition Economics from King’s College London (2020) and holds a Bachelor of Law and a Master of Law Degree from “Sapienza” University of Rome (2012).
Furthermore, he attended two Summer Schools in Competition Economics at the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (GSE) and in Microeconomics at LSE to strengthen his economic background. Within these fields, Dr. Faraone published several articles in Italian and International journals (Mercato Concorrenza Regole; European Competition Law Review; Nuovo Diritto Civile).
Before joining the European University of Rome, Dr. Faraone worked in the competition departments of leading international law firms, based at their Rome and Brussels offices, where he offered judicial and extra-judicial advice in all areas of competition law (and, in particular, in the regulated sectors of telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, energy, and food & beverage) and assisted clients across the full spectrum of regulatory, competition and compliance matters faced by companies operating in the digital, tech, and media environment.
He is a qualified lawyer.
